A Ritual Cantata for Four Singers and Four Ensembles

This music is conceived as the opening act of a collaborative all-night vigil, dedicated to synchronicity across different cultures and times. Four ensembles are positioned to represent the four cardinal points, with the audience in the center. The elements of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water are invoked and subsequently identified with each of the four singers and ensembles in their given location. The texts are drawn from a range of spiritual traditions, linked by their use of elemental imagery, and periodically repeating the call to stay awake through the night. Following a course shaped by the selected texts, the relationship between the different sound sources undergoes a journey from conversation to conflict to blending and union. A healing prayer near the closing is to be accompanied by projected film images related to the element of Water in its present ecological reality. The images are ideally to be filmed in the vicinity of the community in which the performance takes place. The closing music of the ritual establishes a loop-based rhythmic framework, which allows a DJ to match beats, mix in new material, and carry the music into a new stage of the night.

The Coalition Against Trafficking in Women held a panel titled, A Conversation Among Men About Sex Trafficking on December 2, 2009 in New York City at the NYU Wasserman Center. The panelists included author, Aaron Cohen, actor/activist Michael Cory Davis, musician/philanthropist, Peter Buffett and Poet/activist Jonathan Paul Walton.

The causes of human trafficking are many with male demand acting as a primary contributor along with gender and racial inequality, poverty, organized crime, globalization and financial and political crisis. However, male demand for the commercial sexual exploitation of women and children is the most direct cause of the expansion of the enormously profitable sex industry, creating an economic incentive for sex trafficking. It's time that men step up and become a part of the solution.

GET ON THE BUS: A PERSPECTIVE FROM THE FREE BURMA MOVEMENT

The streets of New York City echoed with a roar for the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma with Amnesty International’s Get on the Bus event on Friday, April 16th 2010. This annual day of action and education is the largest grassroots self-organized event that Amnesty International USA has all around the country. Spearheaded by Amnesty International's Group 133, based out of Somerville, Massachusetts, approximately 1000 student activists gathered from around the USA to call for human rights in Burma, Sri Lanka, Iran, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tibet.

The event began at Cooper Union where venerable U Pyinya Zawta and U Gawsita from the All Burma Monks’ Alliance educated a full house in The Great Hall about the horrific realities that that exist in Burma. They both emphasized the imperative roll that the international community plays in helping their country, especially students. A protest of this magnitude sends a tremendous message to the people of Burma. It encourages everyone that they are not alone in their fight for freedom.

Following the brave monks, who helped lead the Saffron Revolution, I felt honored to express my concerns about Burma through my poem, Amnesty. Written for Amnesty International’s Get on the Bus, the poem is a call for action to help the people of Burma.

Later in the afternoon, Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across from the United Nations was illuminated by images of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and sweet sounds of students cheering for justice. Amnesty International mobilized, educated and lead this community of students and now we can only hope that their cries for human rights in Burma will be heard. The movement for a democratic Burma started with students and as my late teacher U Han Lin once taught me, students will lead Burma towards freedom.

U2 Walk On: A last request from the late Burmese freedom fighter, U Han Lin

On the anniversary of the late Burmese freedom fighter, U Han Lin's birthday, September 21st and moreover on Peace One Day, I am presenting this short film request for the audience of the band, U2.

U2 has so graciously written a song for the world's only incarcerated nobel peace prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, called "Walk On."

The song inspired the late, Burmese freedom fighter, U Han Lin especially during his long march and hunger strike campaigns.

As stage four lung cancer grew upon him and time was not on his side, U Han Lin made a special last wish to me. He asked me to make a documentary about his cause for the International Campaign for Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma.

Within' the conversation we shared on tape, he mentioned his vision of his long march campaign being accompanied by U2's song "Walk On."

So, as I have been honoring his wish with all my heart, making the documentary about his life, cause and the struggles of his homeland, I now echo this request to the band U2 for their blessing.

Dear U2,

Thank you for your continued support for the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma and moreover for human rights all over the world. As you have read and witnessed the late, U Han Lin, made a special request to use your song in his campaign's documentary. Would you be willing to donate your song, "Walk On" for our documentary, Honoring Home? New York, NY - On Wednesday, April 7th, 2010, Free Burma Alliance and Network 355 will hold a fundraiser to benefit the Burmese children refugees at Mae Tao Clinic in Thailand (www.maetaoclinic.org). The event will expose New Yorkers to Burmese culture, while raising funds to support the renowned clinic. The fundraiser will take place from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the famed Friar’s Club, located at 57 East 55th Street in New York City (www.friarsclub.com). Guests will include VIPS such as celebrities, politicians, and philanthropists.

Approximately 2,500 Burmese children currently live on the premises of Mae Tao Clinic, many of whom are orphans and former child soldiers. Established in 1989, the Mae Tao Clinic provides free health care for refugees and other individuals, who cross the border from Burma to Thailand, escaping armed conflict and rampant human rights violations in their homeland. The clinic is led by Dr. Cynthia Maung who has received many honors for her humanitarian work including recognition as an “Asian Hero” by TIME magazine in 2003, and a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, just to name a few.

The fundraiser will draw attention to this important cause and raise much-needed funds for the Mae Tao Clinic. In addition to the silent auction, the evening's program will include a traditional Burmese dance performance, photography exhibition by The Open Society Institute, a presentation by Heroes Serving Humanity, a video clip from an upcoming documentary by Jeremy Taylor “Burma: An Indictment”, and a personal video message from Dr. Cynthia Maung. Premium Open Bar and Buffet Style dinner will be served. Silent auction includes exciting items from Michael Kors, Lancome, Chanel, Swarovski, N : F : P, New Form Perspective, Delirius Design, Kimberly Hotel, Julia Dale Group, Momo Art, Aroma M, BeautiControl and Naxart. A Call for Action - The UN Security Council's Responsibility to Protect

Please sign this petition in solidarity with the Long March and Hunger Strike for Free Burma and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

In solidarity with the Long March and Hunger Strike campaign, I will echo this sincere cry for help. I am mortified as a concerned citizen to continuously read horror stories from Burma with little to no action that mobilizes aid that is needed since Senior General Than Shwe illegally raped the people of Burma from their legal right to elected leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy.

With the international community aware of this atrocity, for some unexplained reason simple actions, which could have made leaps and bounds for the people of Burma have been ignored. The Aids epidemic in Burma is a threat to our modern day world within and outside Burma. Doctors Without Borders has clearly explained they cannot handle this problem alone, but they urgently need more help with Burma. There is a cancer growing in Burma because of Senior General Than Shwe's reign of terror. It is multiplying fast with issues of refugees from Burma being forced into a modern day exodus through malaria infested jungles to neighboring countries. Women and children as a result are being trafficked as sexual slaves. This is unacceptable.

It is clear that this predicament will get worse because of Burma's lacking education and fortified child soldiers. This is not only irresponsible to allow to continue, but also it is a threat to international security. When children are trained to use rape as a weapon of war, there is no telling what the future will hold. As a man who hopes for a future that will blossom with the ideals of the United Nations aspirations, I beg you to head the call which is Burma.

I herby stand by Desmond Tutu in full support for a UN Security Council Commission of Inquiry and a global arms embargo on Burma. Without heading this call, the UN Security Council is putting not only Burma, but also the international community in jeopardy. I recognize the reality that this world has many problems, but such tyranny and oppression as the case in Burma must not continue.

As the grandson of Jack Hellman, who escaped from Nazi occupied Germany by the Kindertransport, I encourage you to remember the past as a path to a brighter future. It is clear that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi invested some money from her Nobel Peace prize earnings to mobilize Prospect Burma. With the infant mortality rate rising and more child soldiers being forced to join the Junta, I hope you will help nurture Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's organization while she is incarcerated illegally.

As torture prevails in Burma's prisons, please hold Senior General Than Shwe and his fellow generals accountable for their crimes against humanity and to end this war on the citizens of Burma.

A Nation filled with fear.

We wait and wait for change in Burma,
but all that has is the name,
the mere sound of Myanmar,
puts democracy to shame.

In 1989 Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned,
for speaking the words of liberty,
shame on you Than Shwe,
for your hopeless hypocrisy.

Enough of politics,
enough with the war,
I’m tired of fighting for freedom,
human rights should not be a chore.

Instead I’ll tell you a story,
about how Burma filled my heart,
and why this poem
began with tears from the very start.

In the hallways of perception,
In the hallways of my school,
I met a facilities attendant from Burma,
who educated me about his country under military rule.

He starved himself outside the United Nations,
each day, equaling each year,
that his country has been up-ducted,
by terrorists who role by fear,

He lead an inspirational peace walk,
four years in a row,
the last year with Cancer,
what a noble way to go.

So now embrace me friends,
as I riddle about the day,
the Saffron Revolution’s one year anniversary,
Burmese Freedom Fighter, U Han Lin, passed away.

Peace walks went on that day,
as tears from the sky fell like rain,
so free the Children of Burma,
like a liberated peace train.

Demand the cancerous tyrants,
to be removed from political power,
or the military children will spread under Than Shwe,
Now it’s time for international Chemo power.

The malicious cells are multiplying fast,
and soon they’ll strike again,
we can not wait for another cyclone,
international intervention must fall like rain.

Education for the children,
Nurture them with loving care,
Provide health aid for the weak,
This is the message to share.

Spread the peace and free Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,
soon she will be 64,
twenty years are enough for miseducation,
when first arrested, she was 44.

Americans were given a chance at changing our government,
democracy reigned down like a storm,
now, it’s time for Burma,
hearts should be getting warm.

So please remember my teacher’s lessons,
as I explained to you from the start,
and with an act of courage,
Help Burma with all your heart.

February 14, 2008 - New York - A year's worth of internet-based collaboration between seventy-four artists and five activists on six continents culminates this weekend with the FREEDOM&ART Panel Discussion at the Mount Beacon Fine Arts Gallery in Beacon, NY, which will focus on the plight of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, an international figure under house arrest in Myanmar (formerly Burma) since 1990 over her bid for political freedom.

The FREEDOM&ART Panel Discussion will start at 4 pm on February 14 and last approximately 2 hours, followed by a casual reception. Signed copies of the book FREEDOM&ART will be available for sale and nearly twenty participating international artists will attend. For more details, please see www.mirca-art.com.

The panel is under the umbrella of Mirca Art Group-FREEDOM & ART, a coalition of artists from twenty-seven countries who met using niche social media website www.artmesh.org. Formed in October of 2007, #artmesh is a by-invitation-only site designed to foster international networking, support, and critiques between member artists. The plight of Aung San Suu Kyi became a rallying cause for a core group of artists on the site who banded together to use their artwork as a peaceful weapon for freedom on her behalf.

"I wanted to see what I could do from my studio in Stockholm where it would be impossible to even think of imprisoning an honest elected (official)," says Stefan Tunedal, a FREEDOM&ART artist from Sweden when asked about his passion for the plight of Aung San Suu Kyi. "A woman like her should not be treated like this. She has the right to be free," adds Hungarian artist Krisztina Asztalos, from the other side of Europe.

The group's namesake book combines artists' quotes about freedom with submitted artwork and was published through www.blurb.com, a website that allows users to design books with free, downloadable software and publish them without up-front costs or minimum volume requirements. Thanks to generous donations from Blurb, FREEDOM&ART's initial distribution of the book, called "Set a Book Free" has already met with international success, having been featured by twenty-three media outlets and fifty-three websites worldwide in thirteen languages. Proceeds from the book are being donated to Amnesty International on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi.

The panel discussion is meant to raise awareness about the book and interest in its namesake traveling show. Speakers include Kyi May Kaung, Fulbright Fellowship recipient, award-winning poet, and activist; Maura Stephens, humanitarian and journalist; Stacie Freudenberg, photographer and activist who has been featured by the important media outlets, including the New York Times and USA Today; Nay Tin Myint, former leader of Aung San Suu Kyi's security detail who was imprisoned and tortured by Myanmar officials; and Jeffrey Hellman, independent filmmaker and poet.

According to panelist Hellman, "The international community must utilize the creative resources that we are privileged to communicate with to advocate for those enslaved, incarcerated, and murdered by the brutal military regime in Burma." Says Carla Goldberg, Executive Coordinator of FREEDOM&ART U.S., as well as editor of its namesake book, "With rape used as a weapon of war, seventy thousand child soldiers, a million refugees, and legally elected leaders denied the right to rule their own country, the Burmese problem is a humanitarian problem. I feel privileged to be part of an era where I can use technology to connect with artists from around the world to develop a project that will change the life of an important political figure I have never even met from a country I cannot visit."

Burmese freedom fighter Han Lin, who died much too young on September 26, 2008, should be awarded this honor posthumously in conjunction with Jeffrey Hellman, the young filmmaker and activist who continues Han Lin's legacy of working tirelessly to free the Burmese people and their brave, brilliant, incarcerated Nobel Peace Prize winning democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, from the clutches of a brutal military regime.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been held by the regime, cut off from outside contact, for most of the time since she and her party won a national election in a landslide in 1990. She has never been able to take her rightful place as the country's leader. Yet she and her suffering compatriots are not forgotten. Burmese individuals and groups around the world continue the struggle to free her and the many other political prisoners, and indeed the entire populace, from the clutches of the murderous cabal that uses rape, torture, kidnapping and conscription of children into the military, forced labor (slavery), and the razing of entire villages as a matter of policy in keeping the people down.

Han Lin, himself a political refugee because of his own anti-junta activities, led the International Campaign for Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma (ICFAB) -- a long name for a poor, ragtag, utterly committed group of activists, primarily Burmese exiles but also including allies from around the world -- who since 2004 have staged hunger strikes, long marches for freedom, numerous demonstrations at embassies of many countries, and meetings with diplomats in those embassies to request and demand action on behalf of Aunt San Suu Kyi and Burma. Through the tenure of Secretary-General Kofi Annan and now under Ban Ki-Moon, the United Nations continues to hear from ICFAB regularly.

Jeffrey Hellman has taken up the torch since his beloved teacher Han Lin was felled by cancer -- the only enemy that could defeat that courageous man. Jeffrey has posted scores of videos on YouTube about Burma, ICFAB, Han Lin, and ASSK, garnering thousands and thousands of viewers. Earlier this year he went to Thailand to visit Burmese refugees in camps near the Thai-Burma border, and shot amazing video interviews with them. He is finishing a film, called Honoring Home, on the life and legacy of his friend and mentor Han Lin.

It would be wonderful to see these two men -- the late 57-year-old Burmese freedom fighter Han Lin and the passionate 23-year-old U.S. American filmmaker and humanitarian Jeffrey Hellman, who is dedicating his life to the cause of freedom in a land halfway around the globe. They are two extraordinary individuals.

Han Lin's family, who continue his work as well, would be especially honored to know that their beloved husband, father, and brother is being remembered with a One World Trailblazer Award; the award would be a worthy tribute to the heroic Han Lin and a well-deserved honor for his mentee Jeffrey Hellman.

HAN LIN, teacher, husband, father, friend, and freedom fighter known worldwide for his passionate commitment to democracy and freedom in his native Burma, passed from this earth on Friday, September 26, 2008, five days past his 57th birthday, with his beloved family by his side.

Born in Palaw Town in southern Burma (which borders Thailand, Laos, India, Bangladesh, and China), Han Lin (Burmese don’t use first and last names; Han Lin is his full name) was the eldest of six children.

He was only eight when the young republic of Burma was overtaken in a coup. Ever since, the country has been under the control of brutal military regimes.

Han Lin taught middle school math and was a village leader, teaching about democracy and daringly speaking against the regime. He married Htay Htay Yee, also a teacher, in 1973. Their first five children were born in Burma—Ne Lin Tun, their eldest son, was born in 1975, second son Aung Phyo in 1977, daughter May Lin in 1981, son Tayza in 1983, and son Thuya in 1985.

Han Lin led his village in the 1988 countrywide peaceful populist uprising, when millions of people demanded democracy and basic rights. They forced the first regime to resign, but two months later the military regained power, slaughtered people indiscriminately, and arrested many opposition leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi. The grim date in Burmese history, August 8, 1988 (8-8-88), is commemorated yearly.

Responding to pressure, the military regime staged an election in 1990; it lost in a landslide to Aung San Suu Kyi’s (and Han Lin’s) party. But the regime refused to allow Aung San Suu Kyi or her fellows to take office; she has been incarcerated for most of the years since, never allowed to take her rightful place as the country’s elected leader, despite winning a Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and having millions of champions worldwide.

After 1988, Han Lin continued the fight for democracy, but faced constant threats. In 1990, to avoid being killed or imprisoned, he was forced to leave his wife and children, then ages 5 to 15. Through treacherous terrain he reached hiding in the jungle near Thailand, some 100 miles from his home.

Two years later, after constant worry and frequent harassment by military thugs, Htay Htay Yee and the children made their way to Han Lin and his fellow exiles.

The family lived in the jungle for six years. Htay Htay Yee gave birth to their sixth child, Thu Yein, now 16, there. In 1996 the family moved into a refugee camp in Thailand, where they stayed a year before coming to Ithaca in 1997.

In 1999 Han Lin began working as a facilities attendant at Ithaca College, where three of his children received their education (Thuya is a senior this year); son Aung still works there. Han Lin worked at IC until December 2006.

In 2004, 2005, and 2006 he led peaceful demonstrations in Washington, D.C., asking U.S. and world leaders to intervene in Burma. The campaigns included long marches to U.N. headquarters in New York, where he and his colleagues met with leaders and diplomats from many nations to negotiate for action on Burma, and staged hunger strikes to draw attention to Burma’s plight.

Han Lin’s group grew into the International Campaign for Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi (ICFAB), formed with the help of Ithaca humanitarian Maura Stephens. In 2005 the group inspired Ithaca Common Council to pass the country’s first city resolution declaring August 8 to be in perpetuity Burmese Democracy Day, to show Ithacans’ commitment to helping make democracy in Burma a reality; more than 100 Burmese families now live in Ithaca.

A wise, visionary, and famously determined leader, Han Lin was known throughout the exile Burmese communities in Asia, the United States, Europe, and the Pacific for his courage and unwavering dedication to helping his compatriots. He spent countless hours strategizing via teleconference and in person with other veteran leaders of the 8-8-88 Burmese people’s movement to stir the people and leaders of the world to do as Burmese democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi asked: “Please use your freedom to promote ours.”

Han Lin was diagnosed with late-stage cancer in January 2007. Like everything, he faced it with bravery and strength. Although it ultimately defeated his body, it could not touch his indomitable spirit, which will live on in his comrades, friends, and mostly in his family, who meant the world to him.

Han Lin leaves his wife, Htay Htay Yee, their children, Ne Lin Tun of Indiana and Aung Phyo, May, Tayza, Thuya, and Thu Yein of Ithaca; his brother Min Aung of Amarillo, Texas, and three brothers and a sister in Burma; daughter-in-law Wai Wai, and many dear friends and fellow activists, including his student Jeffrey Hellman, who has been making a documentary about his life called Honoring Home, and Maura Stephens, his U.S. partner in ICFAB.

Thousands not found.

Thousands left buried in the ground.

Question to you in the crowd.

How do you know?

How do you know about Burma?

Was it the Saffron Revolution?

Me, I found my Burmese brother, Han Lin, preparing for Hunger Strike outside our prestigious

But promises that they gave to him,

The UN Security Blocked by the dealer,

We can give the dealer a vote,

Honoring Home

Many years ago I met a Burmese man, Han Lin. He used to be the director of the Pyo Pan Wai School and also was a primary school teacher in Burma. When I met him, he was a janitor at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. I introduced myself to him and he educated me about his homeland. Soon I found out he was about to embrace a long march from DC to the NYC followed by a hunger strike to the death outside the United Nations until they put Burma on their agenda. He and the International Campaign for Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma did this for 4 years in a row and Han Lin went 18 days once without food.

I can see now, why he was so inspired to do such because Han once maid a promise to a band of brothers on the border, after the 88 uprising, that who ever was able to survive would find help. The next day Han Lin woke up to find out that all of those friends were murdered by the ruthless military regime's Junta. He's been keeping his promise ever since.

This janitor became my teacher as I focused my Film, Photography, and Visual Arts BFA around his cause and his story. It started off with my photo thesis about him and it was followed by an independent project about his story, both under the title, Honoring Home. In the midst of my work Han Lin asked me if I would be able to make a feature film about all of the things he had been teaching me. On April 4th, 2006, on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, one of Han Lin's children (of six total) told me that Han Lin had been diagnosed with a late case of stage four lung cancer and had very little time to live. Now that he is so sick I have to use his message and keep my promise to him to tell the story to the world by any means necessary.

Ten of his former students from the Pyo Pan Wai School are still on the Thailand Burma Border, though the rest of his former orphan students were able to come to the US with Han Lin. I am working now to produce this documentary and to help his former students in any way that I can. I care very much for all the children of Burma, especially because of the poor educational system provided, improper health care available, and the huge amount of child soldiers (approximately 70,000 more than any other country in the world).

The documentary was fortunately picked up by my professor, Changhee Chun, who is co directing/co producing the film with many students and alumni from Ithaca College. This professor made a class out of this documentary about Han Lin's story. We just got back from Thailand and now we're working on completing the film.

I will not stop working for the Burmese people's human rights, because I feel like I am bearing the responsibilities of an incredible leader who taught so many about the horrors in Burma and the need for immediate aid from all nations.

A time of terror in Myanmar,
Burma under siege,
A country of 50 million hostages,
A peninsula under the sea,
Nargis the cyclone,
the plague,
the wrath,
of years in turmoil and blood,
Came shuttering down on innocent people,
Children lost in the mud,
My years of dedication have taught me one thing,
And indeed this is a first,
When international aid is hidden from Burma,
My friends we're off for the worst,
Today the 10th will go down in history,
A day,
A referendum, a curse,
If this bill comes to pass,
Burma will die of thirst,

(Washington, DC) The United States Campaign for Burma today called for the U.S government to respond to a major humanitarian crisis in Burma made by tropical cyclone Nargis, by providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Burma. The military regime has placed disastrous restrictions on humanitarian organizations operating inside Burma, forcing some to stop their operations. During this humanitarian crisis the regime must allow relief organizations to reach the most vulnerable populations. Delivery of assistance must be immediate and unfettered by the authorities.

The Burmese military regime did almost nothing to warn the people of Burma. Instead, the regime's newspapers have been chock-full of propaganda about why the people of Burma should vote "yes" on a referendum that is an attempt to entrench military rule for many years to come.

The junta's security forces and militias, who have been quick to attack and arrest democracy activists, are playing no role in helping the victims of the cyclone. According to Aung Zaw, editor of the Irrawaddy magazine based in Thailand said "People are very angry with the slow response coming from the military government."

In contrast, everyday villagers and citizens are beginning to clear the debris by hand. Buddhist monks, who led nationwide, peaceful protests aimed at ending military rule in Burma last autumn, are now on the streets, cleaning debris together with the people and helping the victims.

Cyclone Nargis devastated major parts of Burma, including major damages in the country's largest city of Rangoon and throughout the Irrawaddy Delta region, Bago (Pegu) Division, Karen State and Mon State. Wind speeds of 120 mile per hour (190 Km/hr) and rain lashed the region from the night of May 2nd to the morning of May 3rd. During over seven hours of turmoil, up to half of the houses in Rangoon were destroyed and many others lost their roofs. Satellite Townships (similar to suburbs) in Rangoon, such as Hlaing Tharyar, Shwe Pyi Thar, Dagon Myothit North, and Dagon Myothit South were hit hardest. In Irrawaddy Division, two Townships -- Kyaik Lat and Latputda -- were almost completely destroyed. On Heingyi Island, there are nearly 100,000 people without homes or shelter. In Pyinsi Village in Pyar Pone Township, out of 3,000 villagers, at least two thousand are missing. The Burmese military junta claimed that over 4,000 people were dead, but the actual number of deaths is much higher.

It is estimated that it will take several weeks to restore electricity and telephone communication in Rangoon. The entire city is paralyzed and hundreds of thousands of people are panicking. It is widely expected that the Burmese military regime will make only symbolic efforts to help those affected. Residents of areas hardest hit by the storm have yet to receive assistance and their basic survival needs are in peril.

"We call on the US Government to provide emergency assistance to the Burmese people immediately through humanitarian agencies," said Aung Din, Executive Director of the U.S. Campaign for Burma. "Cyclone Nargis directly hit Burma; its tsunami-like effect requires the United States and the international community to respond immediately or many more people will die."

"It is critical that any aid provided not be delivered through the notoriously corrupt government. The military and the organizations run by the wives of the Generals will only siphon off money and keep supplies for themselves. Money and humanitarian assistance should only be provided to trusted, international humanitarian organizations who can reach the victims of the cyclone directly," added Aung Din. # # #

As my birthday approaches the only gift I am asking for is the gift for others. All my life I have been blessed with great privilege. This is not the case, however, for my Burmese brothers and sisters running from persecution by the malicious military junta in Burma.

As an individual that exists on this planet because my grandfather and grandmother were saved from persecution from Nazi occupied Germany, I have no reason to want more for myself at this time. The Park School of Communications and the Department of Cinema, Photography, and Media Arts will present a collection of student films on Korea on Tuesday, October 16, at 8:00 p.m. in the Park Auditorium.

The first film, Red, Yellow & Blue, was created as part of Professor Changhee Chun's Practicum class during the spring 2007 semester, and Jack O Lantern and Honoring Home were produced as part of two independent studies courses.

Three documentaries -- VISA: Travels of the Labor, People Make Mistakes, and Free Trade were filmed on location in Korea as part of a partnership between Ithaca College and Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea, during a summer 2007 course. The course, Crosscultural Documentary Research and Production, included not only Ithaca College students, but also students from Hanyang University.

We are urging human rights supporters and Burmese throughout the world to organize demonstrations at China's embassies and consulates on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007, the anniversary of the take-over of Burma's military regime in 1988.

Since China has paralyzed the United Nations Security Council from doing its job on Burma, the Council has failed to act, just as it waited until too late in Rwanda and Darfur. Therefore, for the first time in history we are launching a new, concerted campaign to call on China to modify its position on Burma.

There are protests happening around the world, but here is the information for those happening in the US.

Background:

The Presidents of US and Indonesia called on China and India to bring their clout to bear on the Burmese military junta to improve its human rights record after talks on the sidelines of an Asia Pacific summit in Sydney, but Beijing immediately rebuffed the appeal.

China wants reconciliation and an improvement of conditions in Burma, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. While Burma's biggest trade partner shuns interference in the domestic affairs of other countries, China
welcomed international efforts to help stabilize the situation in Burma.

China holds a very unique economic and political position with Burma (Myanmar) and with this is capable of encouraging a peaceful transition to representative democracy and respect for human rights.

Burma's military government, the SPDC is responsible for:

-The mass crackdown on democratic movements and free speech, including the unlawful detainment and torture of activists and students.
-RAPE as a military weapon.
-Housing the world's only imprisoned Nobel peace prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi.
-Destruction of 3000+ villages, 1.5 million refugees.
-Most child soldiers of ANY country in the WORLD.
-Arbitrary hike of fuel prices and other resources, exacerbating the dire economic situation of the Burmese and other ethnic minorities.
-Ethnic cleansing and military operations against civilians.

Daechuri is being destroyed. Daechuri lives!

After holding their last candlelight vigil on March 24th (see previous post), Daechuri and Doduri farmers began to leave their homes. The farmers came back on Saturday, April 7th for a parting ceremony. During the ceremony, a procession of farmers and supporters walked from Doduri to Daechuri. When they reached Daechuri, the villagers buried a time capsule in front of the rubble of the Dachuri elementary school, destroyed by police last May. The time capsule contains messages from villagers and supporters, some written on paper and others painted on wood.

The farmers have never stopped opposing the base expansion or demanding their right to stay on their land. The time capsule was buried under flags that read “return!”. The time capsule expressed their hope that one day soon, the machines of death and empire that have destroyed their community will fall silent, and that they will be able to come back to reclaim the time capsule and rebuild their homes.

The activists who have made Daechuri and neighboring Doduri their homes will also begin to leave this week. Some of them will set out this week on a “Peace march” from Daechuri to the Blue House (the president's house) in Seoul. The KCPT alliance of Korean social movements is planning a similar march in May, and will continue to organize against the base expansion.
The farmers will live in temporary housing for two years, and many will then move to a new village. When they came back to say goodbye to their homes on April 7th, they found that the destruction of their town had already begun. Many of the murals and poetry on the walls of their village were already rubble. While villagers and supporters shouted “stop base expansion” around the banners and other objects that they had lit on fire as part of the ceremony, demolition equipment smashed a nearby house.

An amazing center of community, art, and hope is being destroyed to make way for a center of war and repression. But Daechuri and Doduri villagers' strength and determination, and the memory of what was created in Daechuri and Doduri, will live in all of our struggles. Wherever there is global empire and exploitation, there will be a thousand Daechuris ready to resist, and next time, to win. Daechuri lives!

DPR Korea floods: WHO coordinates medical aid

New Delhi, 24 August: Following a request from the government of DPR Korea, WHO is coordinating supply of medical aid to the country following floods in eight of its Provinces and the capital city of Pyongyang. Coordination is required to avoid duplication of efforts and to ensure geographical coverage.

The DPR Korea government is according top priority to the health situation following floods and landslides that have left 221 dead and 89 290 people homeless. As many as 93 500 people have been affected by floods since 5 August. No disease outbreak has been reported so far.

WHO has been alerted about the possible need for vaccines for protection against water-borne diseases. WHO is preparing to send emergency medical kits which can treat 80 000 people for three months. The immediate need for essential drugs and medicines (EDM) can be taken care of by the large stock available with UNICEF in DPR Korea, but further supply of medicines will be required to stock the health facilities in the country. In addition to medicines, the government has identified the need for other medical supplies and potable water.

“We have already sent the first consignment of essential supplies to DPR Korea. We are now awaiting a detailed list of medicines required from the government for further action” informed Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Deputy Regional Director for WHO’s South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO).

Since the torrential rains started in DPR Korea, SEARO has rushed 1200 packets of Oral Rehydration Salts and 80 000 chlorination tablets for water purification to flood-affected people. Technical guidelines to deal with the impact of flood, which include Do’s and Don’ts for people in shelters and inundated areas as well as disease surveillance guidelines for use of health centres, have also been provided.

We are a small but determined loose-knit group of Burmese exiles and allies from the United States brought together by our shared passion for the Burmese people and our democracy leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. We engage in grassroots activism to bring the world’s attention to the desperate human rights situation in Burma, the illegal ongoing incarceration of Aung San Suu Kyi, and the obligation of the rest of the world to take meaningful action to end the tyranny of the Burmese military regime.

Through public education, leadership development initiatives, conferences, and advocacy campaigns at local, national and international levels, USCB works to empower Americans and Burmese dissidents-in-exile to promote freedom, democracy, and human rights in Burma and raise awareness about the egregious human rights violations committed by Burma's military regime.

The Korean government is currently displacing elderly farmers from their land in order to accommodate the relocation of a U.S. military base from its current location in Seoul to Daechuri, Pyeongtaek. This documentary is an expression of each student's experience with the farmers in Daechuri, their traditional culture and modern art, and their daily struggle against the Korean government's illegal actions to drive them off their lands. As the tensions grow stronger each day, it is imperative that the U.S. and Korea assume responsibility for their actions.

Dear friends,

On June 16th and 17th I want to invite you to a party at my home to help a campaign to free the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Aung San Suu Kyi. She is held under house arrest in the Southeast Asian country of Burma by one of the world's most brutal military dictatorships.

I'm hosting the party because her birthday is June 19th, and I and many other people across the United States are all organizing events to try and draw attention to her struggle. We are all staying at home for 24 hours of self-imposed "house arrest" in solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest in Burma. You don't have to do this though -- I just want you to come to my party during my arrest so I can show you a video about Burma and ask you to send letters to our members of Congress.

My party will start at 12:00PM, and I will be preparing Burmese food and beer/wine. I am going to raise between $300 and $1,000 at this event for the campaign to free Aung San Suu Kyi, so I'm asking that everyone make a donation.

"The struggle for human rights and democracy in Burma is not easy, but as Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." On June 16th and 17th, let's raise our voices for what matters."

I have arranged for this event to be documented as a part of my independent documentary film, photography, and visual arts project, "Honoring Home," through Ithaca College's Roy H. Park School of Communications and the International Campaign for Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma.

I am currently directing this project to honor Han Lin, Burmese Freedom Fighter. See: www.ithaca.edu/icq/2004v4/burmese/index.htm/ Han taught me everything I know about Burma as well as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. He has gone on hunger strikes, long marches to the U.N. and encourages everyone to honor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's request, "please use your liberty to promote ours."
